On the use of second-order derivatives and metamodel-based Monte-Carlo for uncertainty estimation in aerodynamics

چکیده
This article adresses the delicate issue of estimating physical uncertainties in aerodynamics. Usually, flow simulations are performed in a fully deterministic approach, although in real life operational uncertainty arises due to unpredictable factors that alter the flow conditions. In this article, we present and compare two methods to account for uncertainty in aerodynamic simulation. Firstly, automatic differentiation tools are used to estimate firstand second-order derivatives of aerodynamic coefficients with respect to uncertain variables, yielding an estimate of expectation and variance values (Method of Moments). Secondly, metamodelling techniques (radial basis functions, kriging) are employed in conjunction with Monte-Carlo simulations to derive statistical information. These methods are demonstrated for 3D Eulerian flows around the wing of a business aircraft at different regimes subject to uncertain Mach number and angle of attack.

Uncertainties due to Fuel Heating Value and Burner Efficiency on Performance Functions of Turbofan Engines Using Monte Carlo Simulation
In this paper, the impacts of the uncertainty of fuel heating value as well as the burner efficiency on performance functions of a turbofan engine are studied. The mean value and variance curves for thrust, thrust specific fuel consumption as well as propulsive, thermal and overall efficiencies are drawn and analyzed, considering the aforementioned uncertainties based on various Mach numbers at...
متن کاملA New Methodology for Frequency Estimation of Second or Higher Level Domino Accidents in Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Using Monte Carlo Simulation
Some of the most destructive accidents of 1980s and 90s which occurred in process industries were domino accidents. Although domino accidents are among the most destructive industrial accidents, there are not much pioneering works done on quantification of them. The analytical formulation of the domino accidents is usually complex and need a deep knowledge of probability rules. Even if the ...

Background: This study presents patient specific and organ dose estimation in computed tomography (CT) imaging of thorax directly from patient CT image using Monte Carlo simulation. Patient's CT image is considered as the patient specific phantom and the best representative of patient physical index in order to calculate specific organ dose. متن کاملPartial inspection problem with double sampling designs in multi-stage systems considering cost uncertainty
The nature of input materials is changed as long as the product reaches the consumer in many types of manufacturing processes. In designing and improving multi-stage systems, the study of the steps separately may not lead to the greatest possible improvement in the whole system, therefore the study of inputs and outputs of each stage can be effective in improving the output quality characterist...
متن کاملSensitivity and uncertainty analysis of sediment rating equation coefficients using the Monte-Carlo simulation (Case study: Zoshk-Abardeh watershed, Shandiz)
The sediment load estimation is essential for watershed management and soil conservation strategies. The sediment rating curve is the most common approach for estimating the sediment load when the observed sediment records are not available. With regard to the measurement errors and the limitation of available data, the sediment rating curve has a degree of uncertainty which should be accounted...
